Liberaal Silver Meikar Vabadusest ja inimõigustest

Riigikogu liikmete avalik kiri Hiina saatkonnale (inglise keeles)

Open letter to the Embassy of People's Republic of China

As a result of long-term oppressive politics of the Chinese authorities a wave of protests has erupted in Tibet last week. The root cause of this rebellion is the suppression of the Tibetan people and culture since 1949. As the result of these colonialist politics the Tibetan people are confronted with the threat of becoming a minority in their own land. Chinese authorities have definitely failed to live up to their promises to respect the human rights that have been given in order to be awarded the possibility to organise the Olympics in Beijing.

Violence in Tibet must be stopped. In stead of repressions against the Tibetan people the Chinese authorities must engage in dialogue with its representatives. We draw attention of the Chinese authorities to the fact that the XIV Dalai lama who has spent 49 years in exile has repeatedly called on China to start the direct talks. We recall the fact that the Dalai Lama has even given up the demand of restoring the independence of Tibet and has repeatedly stated that he would accept a genuine autonomy of Tibet as an outcome of negotiations. We find the response of Chinese authorities - who in stead of starting the dialogue have made up an enemy figure out of the Dalai Lama and even punish people for carrying his picture - totally unacceptable.

Such politics go against the internationally agreed Human Rights and Olympic principles. Repressive solutions to the crisis are not sustainable in the long run. Colonisation of Tibet must be stopped.

We support the suggestion made by Dalai Lama that the current situation in Tibet needs an international investigation. If China is to host the Olympics the situations in Tibet has to be improved now.

On the behalf of the parliamentary support group for Tibet we call on Chinese authorities:
1. to stop violence against the people of Tibet;
2. allow demonstrations to exercise their right to freedom of expression and assembly;
3. refrain from use of force against Tibetan protesters;
4. release all Tibetans who have been arrested or detained;
5. allow international media unobstructed to Tibet, and
6. start immediate talks with the representatives of Dalai Lama;

    Valjud kiidusõnad eeskujulikele poliitikutele.
    Minu teada on riigikogus 101 liiget. Kas ülejäänutel on eriarvamusi, kartusi või lihtsalt “liiga kiire”, et raisata 5min allkirjastamaks ametlikku protesti tõsise inimõiguste rikkumise vastu?

    Respekt 13 otsustusvõimelisele.

    Okei, jääb veel võimalus, et pöördumist ei tutvustatud kogu riigikogule. Asja tausta mitte tundes ei tee ma ka mingeid eeldusi.

    See oli Riigikogu Tiibeti toetusgrupi avaldus, ehk sellele kirjutasid alla toetusgrupi liikmed. Selles suhtes on see erinev mõne nädala eest vastu võetud Georgia toetusavaldus, mida algatas väliskomisjon ja mis võeti vastu suure saali istungil.
